Maths

At St Augustine’s CE Primary School, we are committed to delivering high-quality mathematics teaching that enables all pupils to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics whilst developing a genuine enjoyment of the subject. We ensure that every child has the opportunity to achieve mastery of key concepts appropriate to their age, allowing them to make sustained progress and avoid gaps in understanding as they move through their education.

Mathematics is a core subject and is taught daily from the Early Years Foundation Stage through to Year 6. We follow the White Rose Maths scheme as the foundation of our curriculum, providing a clear and coherent progression through small, carefully sequenced steps. This is further strengthened through a Teaching for Mastery approach, informed by the NCETM and local Maths Hubs. Together, these approaches ensure a strong focus on deep conceptual understanding, fluency, reasoning and problem-solving.

Lessons are carefully structured to build on prior learning, with regular opportunities for retrieval and practice to support long-term retention. Pupils are encouraged to apply their mathematical knowledge across a range of contexts, including real-life situations, enabling them to see the relevance and purpose of mathematics. A strong emphasis is placed on the development of mathematical language, with pupils explicitly taught key vocabulary and supported to explain, justify and reason using precise terminology.

We promote a positive and inclusive approach to mathematics, underpinned by the belief that all children can succeed. Through high expectations, appropriate challenge and targeted support, pupils develop confidence, resilience and independence. Mistakes are recognised as an essential part of the learning process, and pupils are encouraged to reflect on their thinking and persevere when faced with challenge.

Our approach aims to foster a life-long appreciation of mathematics, ensuring that all pupils leave St Augustine’s equipped with the skills, understanding and confidence needed to succeed in the next stage of their education and in everyday life.
